The Cordillera Blanca mountains near Huaraz are very popular amongst mountain climbers because of their easy access. Whereas in the Himalayas one may walk a week just to get to base camp, experienced climbers get up and down Pisco in just 24 hours. |
|
For beginners Pisco offers an excellent opportunity to get some high altitude excercise. Depending on your condition you can go all the way to the summit or just climb to the col at the snowy base of the mountain from where you can enjoy one of the best views over the Cordillera. |

There are numerous agencies in Huaraz offering guides, equipment and if you like a cook and food. The 2 hour car ride to the starting point passes by the spectacular llanganuco lakes. It is just a few hour walk from there to base camp (4680 m) where you can camp or stay, if you are prepared to pay, in a recently built 'refugio'. Check out the warm kitchen if you have cold feet. You wonder how they dragged up the massive stove which both cooks and heats a shower. |
|
From base camp you have an impressive view on the Nevadas Pisco, Huandoy, Yannapaccha and Chopicalqui. Climbers that want to climb the Pisco summit often stay in the smaller morraine camp to avoid having to walk through the massive morraine field at the base of Pisco in the dark. It takes a few hours of rock hopping to get there. Sturdy mountaineering boots are recommended to support your ankles. Unlike at the base camp there is no fresh water at the morraine camp. |

Most of our chain smoking crew had never climbed a mountain before and for our purpose to shoot some film scenes with a view in the snow the col, just a few hours up from the morraine camp was all we aimed to reach. When we put on our clamp-ons around 12:00 at the snow line ready to scale the last hour to the col more serious climbers that left at 1:00 in the night to reach the summit where already taking theirs off to descent.

It is important to take a guide through the snow as there can be tricky cravasses underneath. The view from the col on the surrounding mountains, notably Peru's highest mountain the Huascaran and the perfect pyramid shaped mountains Artesonraju and Piramide is stunning and renowned. (K. K.) |
